Burnt Ranch students learned about both traditional and contemporary culture and activities of local tribes. Students visited many stations to play traditional Native games, watch the basketweaving process, clean weaving fibers from woodwardia fern, and braid beargrass. Students made pinenut earrings; dentalium necklaces and earrings; hair sticks; fish prints; and other crafts.
Thanks to the generosity of community and staff, there was a room filled with cultural items such as baskets from numerous tribes, local and non-local regalia, weaving materials, and many other traditional items on display. It was a wonderful learning experience for all.
After the salmon and acorn lunch, the students gathered in the cafeteria to listen to stories from several local storytellers. Following the stories, a few students and their grandfather demonstrated a Brush Dance. Students learned about what this local ceremony is for and how important it is and has always been for the Native people in the area. They got to see traditional regalia in action and hear some beautiful Brush Dance songs.
This beautiful October day showed just how lucky we are to live in our unique community with all that there is to offer here. Thank you to everyone who donated time, fish, acorns, and everything else to make this an incredible day for everyone involved.
